Sarah Kihika Kasande is an Advocate of Courts of Judicature in Uganda. She currently serves as the Head of Office of the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) in Uganda and the Head of the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa Programme. She is passionate about social justice and human rights and has over 13 years of experience in peacebuilding, gender justice, and transitional justice. Sarah has provided technical assistance on reparations, truth-seeking, national and international prosecutions, and gender-inclusive transitional justice processes to victims’ groups, civil society organisations, and state actors in various African countries, including Uganda, South Sudan, The Gambia, Tunisia, and Kenya. Sarah has researched, worked, and engaged with conflict-affected communities in Uganda and supported grassroots women’s groups and social justice initiatives that champion women’s access to justice. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund and a Co-founder of Chapter Four Uganda. In addition, Sarah has been a Fellow in Residence at the Auschwitz Institute for Genocide Prevention. Before joining the ICTJ, Sarah was a Senior Program Officer with the Uganda Association of Women Lawyers. She holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law from the Central European University, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons) from Makerere University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre.
